Did you know that flu season peaks at February each year? For many people, the flu vaccine is a good defense against getting the flu. The best time to get the vaccine is in October or November.

The flu vaccine – available as an injection (shot) or as a nasal spray – is a covered benefit for CareOregon members. You may get a flu vaccine from your primary care provider or pharmacist. You do not need a prescription to get the vaccine from a pharmacist.

When you are feeling sick, you want to do everything you can to feel better. But antibiotics are not always the answer. Most illnesses are caused by two germs: bacteria and viruses.

Viruses are not killed by antibiotics. Taking antibiotics for viral illnesses will not cure them or make you feel better faster.

Viruses are the most common cause of:

  • Colds and flu*
  • Runny noses*
  • Sore throats (except strep throat)
  • Most coughs, chest colds and bronchitis*
  • Most middle ear infections
  • Most sinus infections*

* Note: Yellow or green mucus does not indicate a bacterial infection. It is normal for the mucus to get thick and change color during a viral cold.

Taking unnecessary antibiotics is unnecessary and expensive. Taking antibiotics can also be harmful. The more antibiotics you take, the more you "teach" bacteria how to outwit them and promote resistance to them. You may develop a severe infection that is difficult to treat and may require hospitalization.
