Being overweight puts many people at risk for developing diabetes. Making healthier food choices is key to help you stay at a healthy weight.
Eat a wide variety of foods, including vegetables, whole grains, fruits, non-fat dairy products, beans, and lean meats, poultry and fish. Avoid high-sugar foods like candy bars, soda, and donuts.
Watch portion sizes.
Make sure your food choices are nutritious.
Get in the habit of reading food labels.
Limit alcohol, which adds calories but no nutrition to your meal. |

Healthy Diet Helps Manage
and Prevent Diabetes
About 21 million American children and adults have diabetes, and almost 1/3 of them do not know it.
People with diabetes do not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily activities. High blood sugar causes nerve and kidney problems, heart disease and stroke. Many diabetics also are overweight.
Diet and exercise play important roles in helping prevent or manage diabetes. If you have diabetes, your primary care provider and/or dietitian can help you create a meal plan that is best for you.
