Seven-year-old Blake Palmer was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome, a rare kidney disease, when he was 3 years old. Mom Nikkole was at his side when Blake had to have part of his kidney removed at age 5. When other kids ask about the scar on his belly, he tells them: “I fought off a Great White shark while surfing in Florida.”
Because he has not been off steroids and medications for four years, Blake also is dealing with high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Despite his health issues, Blake remains cheerful and full of spirit. He likes spending time with his family.
"Blake has kept a great attitude. He is our strength,” says Nikkole. Through the nonprofit NephCure, Blake helps raise awareness about the disease and its impact on young children. He led fund-raisers for NephCure at his school and local community.
