Getting Help

Many more could get food stamps

GroceriesIf the economy has you worried about how to keep your family fed, there is help if you need it.

Many Oregonians could qualify for food stamps, but don’t know how to get them.

The state of Oregon can let you know if you are eligible or give you an application. You can call 1‑800‑SAFENET (1‑800‑723‑3638).

You can also download an application or a brochure.

By early 2010, everyone in the state should have access to 211info, a free resource that can help with all kinds of health and human services. You use the telephone number 2‑1‑1 for this information, just like you use 9‑1‑1 for emergencies and 4‑1‑1 for telephone directories.

211info is up and running for Washington, Clackamas and Multnomah counties. Planners expect to start the service in Marion and Lane counties in 2009, and will seek funds to add other parts of the state later.
