The freshest produce in town
Working in a garden is a great way to get exercise. And it’s great for getting good, healthy food inexpensively.
Community Gardens—They’re great if you have no room for your own. Portland has 30 community gardens, and even offers fun gardening classes for children. Find out more by sending an e-mail to childgard@ci.portland.or.us, phoning 503-823-1612 or visiting www.portlandonline.com/parks. For community gardens in other areas, check city listings in the phone book or search the American Community Garden Association web site.
Farmers’ markets—It’s your next best option for the freshest produce. OHMS offers free cooking classes at the Grants Pass farmers' market, every Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at NW Fourth and F streets. Find farmers' markets in other communities at www.oregonfarmersmarkets.org/.
