Driving Safely

Seniors can drive easier after a driver-safety class

Eyes don't see as well. Ears don't hear as well. Reaction time slows. All of these effects of aging make a difference when you're driving a car.

Driver

If driving is your only choice, you want to make sure to be as safe as you can.

You can be safer and save money by taking a driver-safety course. You'll be less likely to have an accident. And you might be able to get a discount on your car insurance.

Many people over 50 choose the AARP driver-safety courses, which focuses on changes due to aging. AARP’s web site, www.aarp.org, has a “Classroom Course Locater” that can help you find a course near you. You cam also call 1-888-AARP-NOW (1-888-227-7669). (Para Espaņol, 1-877-MAS-DE-50, or 1-877-627-3350.)

If you can’t get into a class—they aren't in every city and the classes fill fast—you can try an online course that you can access from home or from the computers at your library or community center. Find AARP’s course at aarpdriversafety.org.

(There are other courses in your communities and online, such as the Mature Driver Improvement Course, available at mature.idrivesafely.com/).

Classes cost less than $20. But they are likely to reduce your insurance costs even more. And they can save your life.
