Winter Health
Let the sunshine in

We’ve all learned to avoid getting too much sun in the summer. But sunshine is also important for health, and in the winter we just don’t get enough.

Man sunning himself

Many people get depressed in the winter because there is less sun. This is called Seasonal Affective Disorder, or “SAD.”

Our bodies also convert sunlight to vitamin D, which we need for good health.

So what should we do?

There is less risk of sunburn in the wintertime, so we can afford to enjoy it when it’s shining.

You might also ask your health care provider about supplemental vitamin D.

Exercise helps reduce depression. Walking is good for most people (see our story on walking trails), and you can talk to your doctor about other options.

Try to sit near windows to capture the sun.
