Home environment and quitting smoking helps people with asthma

Help for children

 Child blowing bubbles

A home environment that cuts back on asthma triggers helps keep children with asthma healthy.

A Multnomah County program helps doctors understand their patients’ home environment so they can plan better treatment. Health care providers can refer their pediatric patients with asthma for a free home inspection by an environmental health specialist.

The Multnomah County Asthma Inspection Referral Program (AIR) will conduct home inspections for households with children with asthma who live in the county and are under 18.

Ask your health care providers about this program.

For more information call Multnomah County’s Healthy Homes Hotline—503-988-4247—and choose the Housing Inspections option. You can also e-mail air@co.multnomah.or.us or visit the web site.

Help for smokers

 No smoking symbol

Did you know that smoking makes your asthma worse? You’re more likely to have asthma attacks, and your attacks will be more severe. You’re more likely to get sick from colds and other illnesses. And your asthma medication won’t work as well.

But you can get free help in Oregon by calling the Oregon Tobacco Quit Line at 1-877-270-7867.
