Youth Employment
Local, state programs offer opportunities for young people

Young people in every county have a chance to earn summer income and learn work skills through a variety of state and local programs. Here are a few of them:

  • Rotary Center for Career Training, Portland—The building at 314 SW Ninth Ave. was purchased by the Portland Rotary Club for New Avenues for Youth in recognition of the club’s centennial. The program prepares homeless and at-risk youth for employment through internships, job readiness training and employment opportunities. For information, e-mail info@newavenues.org.
  • IRCO, Northeast Portland—IRCO’s bilingual staff runs the Youth Employment Services Program (YES) and the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP), which provides immigrant and refugee youth with summer and after-school employment opportunities that allow them to continue in school. Call 503-234-1541 or see the web site, www.irco.org.
  • In every county cross the state, the Oregon Youth Employment Initiative (OYEI) provides education, training and employment opportunities for young people ages 15 to 24.

For example, some of this work is through the Oregon Youth Conservation Corps, which also supports key conservation projects, including bridge and trail maintenance, planting, fencing and water projects.

You can find videos about OYEI and links to the programs specific for each county on the state’s web site, www.odccwd.state.or.us/oyei/.
