Healthwise Handbook provides self-care advice
![]() |
The Healthwise Handbook is a preventive care, health maintenance and self-help manual designed to provide home care advice for a wide variety of health conditions. Our goal is to help our members increase their knowledge and take a more active role in their own health care.
CareOregon member families can receive a free book on request. We let our members know that the Healthwise Handbook is not meant to replace their primary care provider (PCP). Rather, we’re urging members to read the book to help them make better self-care decisions and empower them to use health care resources wisely and responsibly.
One of the more important offerings of the book is information about when to see a doctor, and how to define and respond to an emergency. The handbook’s self-care and ask-the-doctor checklists are excellent tools to better prepare our members for doctor visits. By outlining their health issues ahead of time, our members will be prepared to clearly communicate their concerns with clinic staff during the office visit.
A Spanish language version of the handbook also is available. If you’d like to receive a library copy of the Healthwise Handbook for your clinic or office, send us an e-mail.
