Tobacco use is a powerful addiction. It often requires several quit attempts before one can successfully stop using tobacco. The support of friends and family members and encouragement from healthcare providers are proven aids in motivating tobacco users to quit.

CareOregon supports your clinical efforts to implement the evidence-based “5 A’s” tobacco cessation brief intervention: Ask about tobacco use; Advise to quit; Assess willingness to make a quit attempt; Assist in quit attempt, and Arrange follow-up.

Remember, November 15th is Great American Smoke-Out Day!  As you encourage all patients who smoke to attempt quitting, keep in mind that tobacco users cannot hear too much, “One of the best things you can do for your health is to stop smoking.”

Our partner, Free & Clear, has a successful track record in helping people quit smoking, but many of our members do not know how Free & Clear can help them quit.  Beginning in late summer 2007, Free & Clear will begin making proactive telephone calls to CareOregon members who have recently filled a NRT prescription.

Do you have a CareOregon patient that has successfully quit smoking?  We are interested in hearing members' success stories. Contact me at 503-416-3689 with question regarding our tobacco cessation program or via email if you have a success story.
