Kristen Benkstein, PharmD

Pharmacy Senior Manager and PGY-1 Residency Program Director

Kristen received her PharmD at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa and completed a PGY-1 residency at the VA Sierra Nevada Healthcare System in Reno, Nevada. She then became a Clinical Pharmacist at the Portland VA hospital and worked in a variety of areas, including the Nursing Skilled Care Unit, formulary management, and disease state management in several specialty clinics (dyslipidemia, erythropoietin, anticoagulation, and heart failure). She was also the Director of Experiential Education. She then came to CareOregon and was responsible for formulary benefit management, P&T Committee, the Part D Medication Therapy Management Program, several special projects, and developed a collaborative with practicing pharmacists in the surrounding community before becoming a manager with the company. When she is not busy chasing her twins around, she enjoys playing tennis, running, reading, and travel.

Melissa Joy BrewsterMelissa Joy Brewster, PharmD, BCPS,

Melissa received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Utah in 2011. While at the University of Utah, she was awarded the Elizabeth Fuhriman Gardner Prize recognizing an outstanding woman in the health sciences for her work initiating and passing syringe legislation in the state of Utah. She completed her Pharmacy Practice Residency at Alaska Native Medical Center where she focused on the psychiatric needs of patients in rural areas. Melissa continued her clinical pharmacy practice at the VA in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she developed and managed multiple clinics for patients with serious mental illness. She was instrumental in the creation of the VA’s National Opioid Safety Initiative and was recognized by the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists for her innovative work implementing the first broad-scale pharmacist-managed naloxone program in the country. Melissa also serves as a consultant and lecturer for regional Burning Man events and other festivals to assist in training staff in providing harm reduction services. Her professional interests revolve around reducing the harms from prescribed, recreational, and illicit substances and include opioid safety, naloxone distribution, drug policy, and psychedelic research. In her spare time, Melissa enjoys working on her small farm, fishing, canyoneering, yoga, and dancing wildly under the full moon.

Marine Schmitt

Though originally from Mulhouse, France, Marine grew up in Irvine, California. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Oregon State University and Oregon Health and Science University in June 2018. Marine chose to pursue a PGY-1 Managed Care residency at CareOregon following AMCP-Nexus where she became inspired by population health principles and strategies used in managed care to optimize patient outcomes and health care resources. Her professional interests lie in population health, data analytics, formulary management and quality improvement. Marine enjoys spending time with her wife and cat, eating her way through Portland, traveling and playing board games.




Kali SchweitzerKali Schweitzer, PharmD

After growing up in Minnesota, Kali moved to Tucson, Arizona for her undergraduate studies and later received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Arizona in May of 2018.  Although Kali worked in a retail setting throughout pharmacy school, she gained interest in managed care primarily through a few lectures at school and APPE rotations. This interest in managed care, particularly formulary management and population health, inspired her to pursue a PGY-1 Managed Care residency at CareOregon. Her professional interests include quality improvement, formulary management, and population health. Kali enjoys traveling, exploring Portland’s many restaurants and craft breweries, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.
