PGY-2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency Leadership

Kara-ShirleyKara Lee Shirley, PharmD, BCPP, BCPS, BCACP

Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator for Behavioral Health

Dr. Shirley’s pharmacy adventure started at an independent pharmacy as a cashier in 1989, eventually attending the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy and earning a PharmD with distinction in 1999. Her clinical passion lies in serving underserved patients with neuropsychiatric illness.

Dr. Shirley has previously held concurrent faculty appointments with Albany College of Pharmacy, Albany College of Medicine as well as Sage Graduate School of Nursing (2001-2007). With Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic/UPMC, Dr. Shirley was awarded a "Pharmacists for Change Fellowship" while initiating WPIC's first psychopharmacology pharmacy consultation service- a vital component for a future PGY2 psychiatric pharmacist residency program (2007). As an Associate Professor at Husson University (2008-2010), she focused upon establishing one of Maine's first accredited schools of pharmacy. However after making a conscious decision to leave full-time academic practice Dr. Shirley returned to her professional roots in community pharmacy practice until 2014 prior to starting her work with CareOregon.

Most recently Dr. Shirley was Ambulatory Care Clinical Supervisor (2015- 2017). Two CareOregon pharmacists were embedded within two local FQHC's (Clackamas County Beavercreek Clinic & Neighborhood Health Center Tanasbourne) establishing clinical services including collaborative prescriptive authority for Diabetes, Hypertension, ASCVD and Smoking Cessation. Currently, NHC has two full-time pharmacist clinicians who have migrated from CareOregon practicing in Tanasbourne, Milwaukie & Canby clinic locations. Also during her two year tenure as the inaugural Residency Program Director for both PGY1 Managed Care & PGY2 Ambulatory Care programs, CareOregon was awarded six years of ASHP accreditation May 2016 until 2022.

As Ambulatory Care Clinical Coordinator she is re-focusing her practice development efforts within the space of integrative behavioral health & primary care with our pharmacy team, CCO's, FQHC partners as well as HouseCall providers. She will also evolve additional collaborative practice relationships while keeping line of sight for emerging opportunities and continued growth for prospective PGY-1 residents. She enjoys travel, performance arts, scuba diving, sky diving, camping and adventure in general.
