The U.S. saw alarming increases in the death rates for diabetes and other common killers in 2020, and a big reason may be that many people with dangerous symptoms made the lethal mistake of staying away from the hospital for fear of catching the coronavirus. Diabetes deaths rose to 24.6 per 100,000 last year from 21.6 in 2019, translating to 13,000 more diabetes deaths than in 2019. This is a 14% increase that was the largest diabetes death rate rise in decades.

Exacerbating the situation, people with diabetes — both type 1 and type 2 — are more likely to have serious adverse complications from COVID-19, a risk that’s likely to be lower if diabetes is well-managed. Now, more than ever, we must step up our efforts to reduce the burden of this serious disease.
